The award of WMJS Musician of the Year recognizes someone who has contributed over a period of time to the West Michigan jazz scene in perpetuating a greater awareness of jazz. “The West Michigan Jazz Society Musician of the Year Award is given annually to a person who has made great contributions to the jazz community,” says Peter Proli, WMJS Board President. “Through music and education, Max Colley III has inspired and encouraged students and musicians of all ages. His passion for music, specifically the genre of jazz is unmatched, and we are so pleased to acknowledge his contributions in this way.”
The award was established in 2000 to recognize musicians who were instrumental in supporting jazz concerts and educational activities in West Michigan that flourish today and will continue into the future. The award embraces a more diverse representation of jazz disciplines in the region. The Board of the West Michigan Jazz reviews Musician of the Year nominations submitted by the board and Jazz Society members, and presents their recommendation at an annual awards dinner/concert.

Monday, April 21st will end this season of Monday Night Jazz with the fabulous Jeff Haas Quintet. Traverse City based pianist Jeff Haas has assembled Laurie Sears on saxes and flute, Chris Lawrence on trumpet, Jack Dryden on bass, and Randy Marsh on drums.
The Detroit Free Press called Haas' music, "extending backward to his familial and religious roots and extended forward to his burgeoning career as a jazz musician, his blend of Jewish music and jazz offers a path lit with originality." The Dallas Morning News described Jeff's music as "swinging Hebrew folk jazz and you don't have to be Jewish to dig it!" Legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck said, "In combining these great musical traditions, [Haas] has created a soulful music that transcends ethnic barriers. I congratulate him and his colleagues for their fine playing."
Jeff also co-produces and hosts a syndicated public radio series called The New Jazz Archive which can be heard every Sunday at 6 pm on WGVU in Grand Rapids.
